The Fennoscandian land uplift: a test and application area for GRACE

Project goal:
An improved model of the Fennoscandian land rise will be provided which serves data modelling and validating of the GRACE experiment (comparison of the satellite data with "ground truth"). Applying most modern gravimetric measuring techniques (terrestrial methods) creates a basis for a precise area model of the land uplift from GRACE data (geoscientific application).
Combination of gravimetric measurement with GPS and levelling to detect temporal gravity and height changes and to model the associated geoid changes (GRACE validation)
Ekmann und Mäkinen 1996:
Data - tide gauge, leveling 1892 to 1991
BIFROST 2001:
GPS 1993 to 1997, geophys. model

  • Area extension: 2000 km (corresponds to degree 10 of shperical harmonic expansions of gravity field)
  • Expected geoid change in 5 years: dN = 3.0 mm
  • Estimated accuracy of GRACE: s(dN) = ± 1.0 mm (degree 2 to 50)
  • GRACE launch: 03/2002
  • Accuracy of absolute gravimetry (FG5): 20 to 30 nm/s² for one station determination
  • Accuracy striven for after 5 annually performed station determinations with absolute accuracy: 10 to 20 nm/s² for a 5 years time interval
  • number of stations: 30
  • involved teams with FG5 absolute gravimeters: 4
  • project start: March 2003
  • project end: end of 2009 (expected)
