GOCE-GRAND II of the Geotechnologien Program

Mission GOCE

The ESA Mission GOCE (Gravity Field and Steady State Ocean Circulation Explorer) is the first satellite mission selected for the newly defined ESA Earth science satellite programme "Living Planet" and will be launched in 2007 (see http://www.esa.int/export/esaLP/goce.html). Besides the system for high-low satellite-to-satellite tracking (SST-hl), as already used for the CHAMP mission
(see e.g. http://www.gfz-potsdam.de/pb1/op/champ/) GOCE will have a triaxial gradiometer on board. With this gradiometer, the second derivatives of the Earth potential can be measured in three directions for the first time in space. An accuracy of a few mE is expected aiming at a geoid accuracy of 1 cm amd an accuracy of gravity anomalies of 1 mgal with a spacial resolution of 100 km on the Earth's surface.

Based on the results of the Earth gravity field analysis new applications in geodesy and neighbouring disciplines (e.g. oceanography, geophysics, climatology and glaciology) will be developed.

GOCE GRAND II
GOCE-GRAND II (GOCE-GRavitationsfeld-ANalyse Deutschland II) is a network of the following German Institutes for the Analysis of the Earth Gravity Field with financial support by the Geotechnologien Program (http://www.geotechnologien.de/):

In 2005 the previous project GOCE-GRAND was completed. This project was financed via the mentioned Geotechnologien-Program as well. Furthermore, this project was realised in broad cooperation within the German geodetic community; all GOCE-GRAND I institutes are involved in the new program. The results of GOCE-GRAND have been published in 2006 in the volume "Observation of the Earth System from Space", edited by Flury, Rummel, Reigber, Rothacher, Boedecker and Schreiber at Springer, Berlin Heidelberg New York.

Quality Assessment of GOCE Gradients

Before entering the final gravity field processing, the quality of the GOCE gradients has to be assessed. For this purpose, a near real-time validation by cross-over (XO) analysis is investigated and will be applied operationally. In addition, regional gravity data will be upward continued to gradients at GOCE altitude, serving as reference gradients for the calibration and validation of the GOCE data. In this context, also the functional model for the external calibration is investigated.
